'Borderlandia' Brings Past and Present Together in Colorful Display

An exhibit at the Tucson Museum of Art is bringing together a mixture of art forms to express the diverse range of emotions many feel on contemporary issues regarding race, religion and the border.

Borderlandia, which runs through June 12, 2011, features many art forms that are both interesting and controversial regarding the thoughts and beliefs of people who experience both sides of border issues.

"We wanted to focus south of the border," said Julie Sasse, chief curator at the museum. "It is very topical."

Sasse said not only have recent border controversies made the exhibit relevant, but major events such as the passing of SB 1070 brought much interest and attention from the community regarding what the exhibit has to show.

"It's talking about what we value these days," she said, noting that Borderlandia has a way of bringing the past and the future together by taking both past and modern issues and often incorporating pop icons into it.

The exhibit features a mixture of glass and mixed media, including computer-generated visuals, resins, plastic figurines and even matchbox cars.

"A number of pieces look at the drug violence on the border," Sasse said. "And you'll see a spinoff on a religious altar piece. . . talking about pop culture."

As with many art galleries and exhibitions, one of the main purposes of Borderlandia is to motivate and inspire visitors as to how relevant art can be regardless of what topic is being addressed.

"I want people to come away with seeing the incredible craftsmanship, and how art can be used in thought-provoking ways," she said. "It makes you think."
