Vehicles of Change

Lowriders come in all shapes and sizes but they are all vehicles of change.

One local club, UnidoS, is more than excited for a chance to prove just that at this year's Tucson Meet Yourself event.

UnidoS, along with other lowrider lovers from the Tucson area, including many from Nogales, have spent weeks preparing their cars for a chance to shine.

"This year we ultimately want to break the stigma," UnidoS representative Rebekah Lopez said. "Often times people make the unjust assumption that lowriders are all about gangsters."

The assumption couldn't be further from the truth.

Lowriders are custom vehicles that ultimately reflect an identity and a passion, Lopez explained.

These custom vehicles are extremely popular in the Southwest and Lopez expects some 50 to 60 cars to show up.

"They're artistic expressions that represent the owner and their heritage," she said. "We've spent weeks meeting and handing out flyers to try to get this point across."

Although the club has made a name for itself in the Tucson community over the course of the last 14 years, UnidoS hopes TMY will help debunk the negative connotations of its craft, and invites participants to take part on Saturday, Oct. 15.

The club and other automobile owners will be showing off their rides and answering all kinds of questions about their projects, lowrider culture, and all the fuel behind their passion.

The Lowrider Show and Shine kicks off at noon on Saturday, and will continue on until about five that evening.

Check back here for continuing coverage, videos of the custom masterpieces, and audio dialogue from some of the owners.
