The event is raising money to complete the construction of a school in Abul, Sudan.

Last year’s event raised over $16,000, which went to the making of the school. Max Goshert from the Arizona Refugee Connection is helping organize this year's event.

“Before the well, women in Abul walked 10 miles each day to fetch contaminated water from a ditch,” said Goshertt. “This year's Kickback is aiming to raise as much money as we can to complete construction of the remaining four classrooms. 75 percent of the funds raised go to build a school for Abul, 25 percent go towards funding future ARC projects.”

The goal for this year’s Kickback event is to complete the construction of the school the ARC (Arizona Refugee Connection) is working with organizations such as St. Francis United Methodist Church and Iskashitaa Refugee Harvesting Network to help make this goal a reality. This year's event is being held by four teams of first semester Eller students working on different aspects of the event, according to their website.

The Arizona Refugee Connection’s mission, stated on their website, is to “create tomorrow’s leaders and today’s community.” There are 6,000 refugees in Tucson. Around 100 UA students are in ARC trying anything they can do to help these refuges with their lives in Tucson. ARC is a completely student-run organization, which works with other refugee organizations, community groups and refugees themselves.

ARC is constantly on the look for volunteers to help them achieve their goal. ARC accepts any volunteers willing to do anything to help out community or charity events that are being held in Tucson.

During this year's event, there will be refugee entertainers to perform. There will also be a professional DJ, a silent auction, cash raffle and carnival-style games.
