A Whole New World at 17th street Market

17th Street Market, located on 840 E. 17th Street in Tucson, Ariz., supplies a potpourri of food, gifts, and music from border towns around the world.
Tom Taylor, store manager of 17th Street Market, said, “Because Tucson is a border town, we have a heavy Hispanic influence here. So we try to accommodate our Hispanic friends with as much variety as we can.”
A big seller for the 17th Street Market, according to Taylor, is the Wild Mexican Blue Shrimp.
"The most popular shrimp is our Wild Mexican Blue Shrimp. People can't wait for that season to come along so they can buy it because it is a beautiful shrimp," Taylor said.
The fish, tortillas, salsas, fresh and dried chilies, beans, rice, hot sauce, pozole and other Mexican inspired ingredients gather in one corner of the store.
The food is organized into one particular area because, “When [people] come to buy their fish, right across the aisle they find all the regular Hispanic products that they want for their meals,” Taylor said.
Customers can purchase Wild Mexican Blue Shrimp, tortillas made fresh by Alejandro’s Tortilla & Bakery and salsa.
Located inside 17th Street Market is 17th Street Music Store, where recordings by artists from countries ranging from Mexico to China can be purchased.
Frank Sanzo, manager of 17th Street Music Store, carries recordings and instruments, as well as holding occasional live concerts in the store, from local and worldly musicians of all different cultural backgrounds.
