The banner panned across the El Guero Canelo stand at Tucson Meet Yourself. The Sonoran hot dog is an authentic taste here in Tucson.  El Guero Canelo showcased this tradition at this year's Tucson Meet Yourself festival, held in the downtown area.

El Guero Canelo was started by the Contreras family in 1993.  The idea of the restaurant stemmed from the hope of opening a restaurant that sold carne asada and Mexican hot dogs, according to the restaurant's website.  El Guero Canelo showcased both of these specific items at this year's festival because of the popularity of the items and the quality.A Sonoran hot dog with all the ingridients El Guero Canelo provides for the hot dog.

Andrea Valdez, an employee at El Guero Canelo, discussed why they chose to sell Sonoran hot dogs at this year's Tucson Meet Yourself.

"They're famous and our most popular item we have on the menu," said Valdez.  "The Sonoran dog is especially popular because people from other cities have seen the episode from Man vs. Food and want to come try it."

Man vs. Food is a TV show on the Travel Channel that shows the host, Adam Richman "scour the country, competing in America's most compelling food challenges," according to the show's website.  Restaurants across the nation have been visited by Richman, which is a positive for these restaurants because of the national coverage of the show.  Man vs. Food is watched by people from all across the country, so these restaurants that are on the show are given more coverage and publicity, which is great for their business.  In one episode, Richman traveled to Tucson and made a stop at El Guero Canelo to try their Sonoran dog.

The hot dog station in the El Guero Canelo stand. The Sonoran dog at El Guero Canelo consists of a hot dog wrapped in bacon, a homemade bun, pinto beans, onions, tomatoes, mustard, jalapeno sauce and mayonnaise.  This delicious combination of flavors brought a lot of traffic at the El Guero Canelo stand at this year's Tucson Meet Yourself.

"We have been really busy," said Valdez.  "It's been pretty crazy but it's been good because there haven't been any problems."

In addtion to the Sonoran dog, El Guero Canelo's stand at the festival also sold carne asada tacos, which is another staple to their traditional and authentic Mexican cuisine menu.

El Guero Canelo has three locations here in Tucson.  One in North Tucson is located at 2480 N. Oracle Rd.  The two South Tucson locations are at 5201 S. 12th Ave., and 5802 E. 22nd St.  Go out and enjoy a Sonoran hot dog!
