Arizona Casinos Increase Economical and Cultural Development

For more than 20 years, Arizona casinos have helped aid Native American reservations-with money and the preservation of culture.

Through various court cases in the United States in the 1980’s it was eventually decided to permit Indian Reservations to host gambling centers on their territories so long as the state in which the reservation is located in has some sort of legalized gambling.

The Desert Diamond Casino is owned and operated by the Tohono O’odham Nation. The Tohono O’odham reservation covers 2.78 million acres in Southwestern Arizona and the northern part of Mexico.

Like many nations seeking prosperity, economically and socially, the Tohono O’odham people chose to build and establish the gaming casino. The Desert Diamond Casino is located in the San Xavier District. According to the Tohono O'odham Nation website, the casinos employ over 1,200 Native American and non-Native American people. Eighty percent of the employees are Native Americans.

According to an Arizona Indian Gaming Association Annual Report, much of the profits from the gaming facility goes toward funding Tohono O’odham Nation’s hospitals that are on the reservation. The hospitals are provided with updated medical equipment. The improved medical facilities can help tribal members with better health care. Improved medical care being provided on the reservation helps eliminate traveling far for medical care.

The National Indian Gaming Association recently released its annual report, spotlighting charitable gifts by tribes from California to Connecticut. While tribes are extremely secretive about their finances, the group estimates that Native American communities gave more than $150 million to non-profits and public programs last year, in addition to the $8.3 billion they were required to give.

Arizona's 15 gaming tribes earned $1.8 billion in gross gaming revenue and were required to hand over $91.7 million to cities, counties and state agencies in the past fiscal year. Voter-approved state compacts require that they share 1 to 8 percent of their net winnings, based on how profitable their casinos are. Most of the funds are then divvied up to organizations throughout the state.
