Helping Hispanic Business For 20 Years
Wednesday, 06 April 2011 06:55
The Tucson Hispanic Chamber of Commerce is celebrating their 20th anniversary this year, and has come a far way from opening their doors twenty years ago.
Since opening their doors, the Tucson Hispanic Chamber of Commerce's priority was to aid Hispanic business owners in Tucson, AZ, and it is continuing to make an impact on the Hispanic community.
"We represent about 600 Tucson business," said board member Raquel Moreno-Blake. "We are responsible for advocating for their needs and making sure their voices are heard on a larger scale."
According to the U.S. Census, there are around 60,000 Hispanic-owned businesses in Arizona.
"There are more and more business owners coming to us every day," said Moreno-Blake. "THCC is an open membership organization that allows anyone to join."
The THCC mission statement says its goal is to "advocate for, and provide services to help grow their members businesses."
THCC is not only just an advocacy group. The organization also offers classes, leadership opportunities for members and scholarships for high school students.
"THCC's goal is to reach out to our community," said THCC board member Sam Williams. "We want to offer our resources not just for business owners, but future buisness owners."
A scholarship is given out each year to graduating high school students in Tucson. The scholarship is awarded to students who have a Latin or Hispanic background, hold a 2.75 GPA and wish to pursue higher education.
"We want the future generations to take on any opportunity they can have," said Williams. "This scholarship really helps some of the winners to pursue a great future."
The classes and leadership opportunities that THCC offers helps keep the buisness owners at the top of their games and make sure their businesses are running efficiently.
"I'm attending a class next week at the THCC Business University," said new THCC member Roxsann Badilla, owner of Pinnacle Restoration. "The class, taught in Spanish, is called 'Quien Compras Esta Materia de todos' or 'Who buys this stuff anyway?' We are going to learn about the realization of a marketing analysis."
The Tucson Hispanic Chamber of Commerce continues to keep their members well educated and well represented in the Tucson and business community.
