High School Athletes

Across Southern Arizona high school athletes are making big impacts in their respective sports. Whether they're seniors taking their talent to the next level or underclassmen looking to dominate high school for a couple more years, here is a list of 10 athletes you should keep an eye out for.Blake Martinez
Although his Canyon del Oro football team just got bounced from the playoffs this year after coming one win short of a state championship his junior year, his football career is nowhere near finished. The six foot two, 235 pound senior will be attending Stanford next fall. According to Scout.com, Martinez was a three star recruit and the 33rd best player at his position in the country.
Cameron Denson
Like Martinez, Denson's Salpointe Catholic football team was knocked out of the playoffs in the first round. Lucklily for him though, he'll have two more cracks at winning a state title as he is only a sophomore. The reciever was his team's premire offensive threat, scoring 15 touchdowns and only 43 yards shy of a 1000 in receiving yards. Along with fellow sophomores Andrew Cota and Breeon Auzenne, the Lancers will be a team to watch in the coming years.
Krystal Quihuis
Another standout sophomore for Salpointe Catholic, Quihuis just won the Division II individual championship in girl's golf. Her stellar play also led her team to the first team title in Salpointe girl's golf history. Quihuis' next goal is to retain her individual title for the next two years.
Morgan Messick
This freshman from Canyon del Oro High School will give Quihuis all the competition she can handle. Messick came in second, right behind Quihuis, in the girl's golf Division II individual standings.
Tim Derksen
Heading into his senior season on the Amphitheater High School basketball team, Derksen has already committed to play for the University of San Francisco next year. Last year as a junior he helped his team to their first state championship, averaging 17.1 points per game and 10.9 rebounds.
Jaime Waltmire
The junior golfer for Canyon del Oro just won the Division II individual state championship, shooting a 142 for the two-day tournament. His individual title also helped win the team title for the Dorados.
Sigourney Sanchez
The junior softball player from Sahuarita High School was huge in their 4A-II state championship last year, hitting two homeruns and accounting for six of her team's 10 runs. The third-baseman now has to focus on retaining that championship form as she prepares for the upcoming season.
Jamee Swan
The six foot three senior from Marana High School announced in September that she would be going to the University of Colorado to continue her basketball career, choosing Colorado over Arizona. Swan was also a big part of the volleyball team.
Joseph Monreal
Last year as a junior, Monreal helped lead his Nogales High School basketball team to their first state championship since 1983. Now the senior who averaged 16 points per game last year has the task of leading his team to a repeat.
Tyler Williams
The junior quarterback for Ironwood Ridge High School has had an outstanding season thus far. Rushing for almost 1000 yards and passing for another 800, his Nighthawks are in the second round of the Division II playoffs. Williams has also passed for 10 touchdowns and rushed for another 14 this year.
