All-Star game in danger of being moved from Phoenix
Wednesday, 02 February 2011 16:45
The passing of new immigration laws last year in Arizona has sparked opposing reactions across the board. One group that has received a great deal of attention for its protests, and will undoubtedly receive even more in the upcoming year, is Major League Baseball.
The passing of SB1070 in Arizona has led to multiple protests by outraged fans, players, owners and even the MLB’s commissioner. According to NowPublic.com, more than a quarter of the MLB’s players are born outside of the United States.
Teams and players in Arizona are receiving a great deal of attention over the passing of the bill. Multiple times over the previous season, the Arizona Diamondbacks were met by protesting fans, some of whom were urging others to boycott supporting the team.Movements have been initiated in an effort to move the 2011 MLB All-Star Game, scheduled to be played in Phoenix, out of the state. These efforts were reportedly started by Rep. Jose Serrano (D-NY) and Sen. Robert Menendez and have received support across the country.
Individual players have made it public they will not play in the All-Star Game if it is in Arizona. Adrian Gonzalez, first baseman for the Boston Red Sox, has made statements confirming his intentions to boycott the game. More on Gonzalez boycott.
Issues within Arizona have even managed to reach prospective players. According to ColorLines.com, team staffs were putting in extra effort to ensure prospects and rookies had photo ID cards on them at all times during their training last year in Arizona.
Despite all the hostility surrounding the Diamondbacks, owner Ken Kendrick has continued to show outright support for the passing of the new laws. TheNation.com reported last season he held a private fundraiser at Chase Field, where the Diamondbacks play, to support the bill.
It still remains to be seen whether the All-Star Game will be played in Phoenix during the 2011 season, and whether organizations in Arizona, such as the Diamondbacks, could be further affected by the states immigration laws.
