The third element: Stone

The third element is stone.

Stone forms the basic, but not exclusive, background for a muralist. Murals, which are Italian in origin, are an important element of Tucson's art scene and can be found all over town. Tucson often captures the eyes of artist with its serene nature scenes.

Jos Villabrille is one of those muralists. He is a native Filipino but after his ex-wife persuaded him to move to Tucson, he didn't want to leave.

Villabrille's art is defined by what is called trompe l'oeil, a technique that deceives the viewer and creates a 3-D effect.

This slideshow presents Villabrille's latest work at the Greek restaurant "Opa" on 2990 N. Campbell Ave. Even though this particular work is influenced by Greek culture, Villabrille incorporates the whole scope of the border region in all his works.

"Most of the requests I get are for desert landscapes," said Villabrille, who mainly addresses private customers.

All of Villabrille's murals are done with a paint brush. A painter since childhood, Villabrille's doctor told him to stop because there was too much lead in his lungs.

Villabrille's art can be found all over Tucson whether you go to the Desert Diamond Casino, the University of Arizona or to about 100 homes across the city. Little pieces of desert landscape grace many formerly cold, rock walls.

Villabrille is now looking at applying for a mural at the Tucson airport. Although the competition is fierce, the outcome would be a reward of up to $25,000 from airport officials to the artist of their choosing.
