Fernando's Dream

Fernando and His Dad

Fernando has been coming to the clinic for eight years, but on his most recent visit, there was a special excitement in the air.
As Fernando was examined by several doctors and residents, his face reflected all the wonder, joy and gratitude of a boy filled with hope and anticipation. Even though he does not speak English, Fernando listened intently to the discussion the doctors are having about his care, watching their faces and body language, hoping to understand something of the conversation.
The doctors later translated the medical plan of action to Fernando and his father in Spanish and Fernando's smile grew wider.

Fernando will soon have the surgery he needs.

The process Fernando will undergo in his medical care is not an easy one. First, he will receive braces on his legs then later he will travel to the Shriners Children's Hospital in Spokane, Wash., for surgery, and the chance for a normal life. The cost of the surgery is paid for completely by the Shriners Children's Hospital and the cost for the airfare is paid for by St. Andrews Clinic, so there is not a financial burden on the family.
It's a long way from Nogales, Son., Mexico, but Fernando is excited about the journey. At 17, Fernando has little time, as St. Andrew's Clinic services are only available for children under the age of 18.
Fernando loves sports and wants to one day play football. But his main desire is to work helping others, especially the elderly. With the help he is receiving from St. Andrew's Clinic and the Shriners Children's Hospital in Spokane, Wash., Fernando's dreams may one day come true.
